Titanic's Near Disaster: Jon Landau Reveals Filming Secrets! (2025)

The iconic film 'Titanic' almost didn't make it to the big screen! In his book, 'The Bigger Picture,' producer Jon Landau shares an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the challenges they faced.

The ship itself was a character, and getting it right was crucial. With historical references and Jim Cameron's vision, they had to figure out how to build a ship that would serve as the perfect backdrop for filming. But it wasn't just about the ship; they also needed to create an entire ocean and a controlled environment to film in.

Finding the right location was a massive undertaking. After a year-long search, they considered a dry quarry in Poland, but it wasn't until they found a vacant plot of land in Rosarito, Mexico, that they knew they had struck gold. Despite the sunny climate, they could envision the ice-filled waters and the Titanic's journey.

Landau describes walking those Mexican acres, planning and imagining every detail. He knew they could build a massive water tank, recreate the Southampton dock, and capture the essence of the Titanic's journey. But convincing Jim Cameron was the real challenge.

There was a catch-22 situation: Fox wouldn't give the green light until Jim visited the site, but Jim refused to go until they had the studio's approval. It was a stalemate until Geoff Burdick and his team built a 20-foot model of the Titanic, which finally convinced Jim.

During their visit, Jim's initial reaction was one of skepticism. He pointed out the lights and a nearby hill, questioning how it could be the middle of the ocean. But after some adjustments to the model, Jim declared it perfect and the only place they could film.

The production became the most expensive film at the time, nearly doubling the initial budget. They faced numerous challenges, from creating special effects to expeditions to the actual Titanic wreck.

Post-production was a long and arduous process, with scenes and plot devices being cut. The press hounded them, spreading rumors and comparing 'Titanic' to notorious flops. The studio buzz was just as bad, with gossip and doubts circulating.

Even Rupert Murdoch, the head of Fox, was skeptical. But during a chance encounter, he promised to wait until he saw the movie before passing judgment.

An advance screening at the Mall of America was a make-or-break moment. The tension was high, and the producers were anxious to see how the audience would react.

As the movie started, there was silence. For the first three minutes, the audience thought they were watching a trailer for 'Great Expectations,' another Fox release. But as the film progressed, the mood changed, and by the end, they were shouting and weeping.

The producers breathed a sigh of relief. They had conquered the challenges and created a masterpiece.

'Titanic' went on to become a box office success, proving that taking risks and believing in your vision can pay off.
