The Future of MotoGP: A Potential New Star?
In a surprising turn of events, Ducati is considering a bold move that could shake up the MotoGP world. With Marc Marquez's return to the Portuguese Grand Prix looking increasingly unlikely, the team is eyeing a replacement that might just be a game-changer.
Enter Nicolo Bulega, the talented World Superbike Championship rider and MotoGP tester for Ducati. Bulega's contract, signed earlier this year, positions him as a key player in the team's future, especially with his experience with Pirelli tyres, set to be introduced to the premier class in 2027.
As the superbike season draws to a close this weekend in Jerez, with all signs pointing to Bulega's rival, Toprak Razgatlioglu, claiming the title, Bulega finds himself with a unique opportunity. With no major commitments in November, the spotlight is on him like never before.
The situation has sparked intense speculation, especially with MotoGP doctor Angel Charte stating that Marquez's return in Portugal would be "very difficult." Ducati team manager Davide Tardozzi added fuel to the fire, confirming that Marquez is almost certainly out for Portimao and that his return might not happen until the Sepang test in February 2026.
Speaking to DAZN, Tardozzi acknowledged the possibility of Bulega stepping in for Marquez at Portimao, saying, "It's a possibility. Nicolo is focused on the SBK championship this weekend; we'll consider his MotoGP debut after that."
The question on everyone's mind: Will Bulega get a test run before his potential debut? Tardozzi remained tight-lipped, saying, "We'll evaluate that after Jerez."
Marquez's injury, a fracture to his right shoulder after a collision with Aprilia's Marco Bezzecchi during the Indonesian Grand Prix, has kept him out of the spotlight. He underwent surgery and has been recovering in Spain.
Ducati has already confirmed that Marquez will miss the Australia-Malaysia double-header, with test rider Michele Pirro taking his place for the Australian Grand Prix this weekend. Pirro is also expected to race in Malaysia on October 25-26.
So, will Bulega make his MotoGP debut at Portimao? Only time will tell. This potential move by Ducati has certainly sparked excitement and controversy. What do you think? Should Bulega get a chance to prove himself in MotoGP? Let us know in the comments!
